Platres – Troodos mountains and Paphos Forest – Cyprus ecotourism, great walking, and exploration possibilities
At an elevation of about 1,000 meters on the Troodos mountains, surrounded by the forest, Platres is the main Cyprus mountain resort. It is found some 40 kilometers north west of Limassol, 60 kilometers north east of Paphos, 80 kilometers south west of Nicosia, 70 kilometers south east of Polis and Latchi, 100 kilometers west of Larnaca and 150 kilometers west of the resorts of Ayia Napa and Protaras. A holiday in Platres gives the visitor excellent opportunities to explore the hidden, green and picturesque part of Cyprus, to walk on the official Troodos nature trails, and also to do easy mountain biking in the extensive network of dirt forest roads in Troodos Forest and Paphos Forest. The excellent trails on the Troodos mountains include the route through the amazing Platy valley (close to Kelephos Venetian Bridge, the villages of Milikouri, Agios Nikolaos, Kaminaria and Phini), the 3 nature trails at the top of Troodos (Artemis, Atalanti, Persephoni), the trails at Madari peak, the trails at Cedar valley, and the trails near Platres and the Platres waterfalls of Caledonia, Millomeri, Chantara and Mesa Potamos. The naturelover will have the chance to study the biodiverse flora and fauna of the area and photograph many of the endemic plant species in Troodos mountains and Paphos Forest. In Paphos Forest with a bit of attention, you may spot the endemic (found only in Cyprus) moufflon subspecies, which has rebounded in numbers to thousands from just a few individuals in the 1950s.
A holiday in Platres could be combined with visits to important monasteries and Byzantine churches in Troodos, including Kykkos monastery (and Kykkos museum) and the Unesco World Heritage sites of ten painted churches of Troodos (Agios Nikolaos tis Stegis near Kakopetria village, Agios Ioannis (St. John) Lampadistis Monastery at Kalopanagiotis village, Panagia Phorviotissa or Panagia Asinou near Nikitari village, Panagia tou Araka near Lagoudera village, Panagia tou Moutoulla in Moutoullas village, Timios Stavros (The Holy Cross) in Pelendri village, Church of Archangelos Michael in Pedoulas village, Timios Stavros (The Holy Cross) Agiasmati near Platanistasa village, Panagia Podythou in Galata village and the Transfiguration of the Saviour in Palaichori village). Panagia tou Sinti (uninhabited) monastery, whose renovation wan a Europa Nostra prize, in the Xeros valley not far from Roudias Venetian bridge in Paphos Forest, is one of a number of cultural attractions in the Cyprus countryside that can be a real treat for the adventurous explorers. Pausing for a Cyprus coffee at a coffee shop in one of the ‘sleepy’ villages of the Troodos mountains can be very rewarding as people in mountainous small Cyprus villages do not see many tourists and are usually eager to have a conversation. They may tell you very interesting stories about how the real Cyprus used to be.
