Ayia Napa (beaches) – top class
Ayia Napa (or Agia Napa as is its official English language name) is found at the south east tip of Cyprus, just west of Cape Greko. Ayia Napa is found about 10 kilometers south of Paralimni (the largest village in the area) and 10 kilometers south west of the coastal resort of Protaras, 40 kilometers east of Larnaca, 80 kilometers south east of the capital Nicosia, 105 kilometers north east of Limassol, 175 kilometers north east of Paphos, 150 kilometers east of Platres and 210 kilometers south east of Polis and Latchi.
Ayia Napa used to be a typical sleepy small Cyprus village 40 years ago and a big contrast to the then cosmopolitan city of Famagusta (most of it is now an off limits, fenced ghost town), about 15 km to the north. In the recent decades however Ayia Napa has been transformed into the most ‘wild’ Cyprus tourist resort with a very steamy nightlife and a somewhat bad reputation. Modern hotels have sprung all along the coastline right on the beautiful Ayia Napa beaches, which are probably the best in Cyprus (if one’s criteria include white sand and calm warm waters). Nissi beach is the picture-perfect Ayia Napa beach and probably the most famous beach in Cyprus. If you will visit one beach in Ayia Napa, this should be Nissi beach. Nissi beach is quite beautiful, and the bay and its nearby islet give the area a lagoon like appearance. It is a beach packed with young people. If you are a family with young children, or are looking for less congestion and some peace and quiet, you can visit some of the other marvelous Ayia Napa beaches, like Ayia Thekla beach, Makronissos beach, Landa beach, Vathia Gonia beach or others. Most of the beaches of Ayia Napa are well organized and have the Blue Flag eco-label. The coastline, especially towards the east and Cape Greko park offers excellent walking opportunities. The E4 European Trail extends on the coast all the way to the park. While you are having a holiday in Ayia Napa, a visit to the Ayia Napa sea caves and Cape Greko sea caves is highly recommended. In the area there are also a few ancient trees well worth a visit. Cape Greko park is a good destination also for birdwatching during bird migration in spring and autumn.
Ayia Napa hotels are rather modern, many are luxurious and have 4 or even 5 star rating. Most are built on the beach or very close by and offer excellent sea views.
